Oh, come on! Gimme a break! Come off it!
To say these same things in French, you’ll frequently hear people exclaim voyons donc! in Quebec. In this expression, the c in donc is not pronounced. It sounds like voyons don.
Examples:
Voyons donc!
Ben voyons donc!
Oh come off it!
Voyons donc, c’est pas important!
Oh come on, it’s not important!
[This entry was inspired by the character Éric in Tout sur moi, “Addict!,” season 4, episode 4, Radio-Canada, Montreal, 6 October 2010.]
So I’m watching 30 vies, and suddenly I hear this phrase yelled at a character out of frustration. Inspired, I come onto your blog and SUCCESS!! A simple search finds me exactly what I’m looking for. Just glad I can spell in French, even if my speaking skills leave much to be desired.
I absolutely love your blog, for reasons such as the aforementioned.
*Squeals in Joy*
Finally! I have been saying this term since I was a kid in immersion classes, but never really had a grasp on it, or met anyone in Alberta who knew it. This is awesome. Thank you.
I’m glad you found it here! 😉
