If you’re worrying about your accent or are scared to use the wrong words when you speak in French, it’s easy to want to talk in a quieter voice, especially in a group of people or in a public place.
That way nobody will hear your mistakes or what you think is your awful accent, right?
But the people around you may have trouble hearing what you’re saying. Then you might see a funny look on their face which you interpret as meaning that your French is bad.
That look almost certainly doesn’t mean your French is bad.
It probably just means “I can’t hear you.”
Speak with a louder voice. When you’re feeling intimidated, don’t lean towards someone to speak to them — that will make you speak in a quieter voice. When you feel that urge to lean in, stop yourself and lean back instead. That will encourage you to speak louder.
Speak in a voice that seems too loud to you. It probably isn’t too loud to others, just you. That too-loud voice is probably at the right volume.
Yes, and it’s not a shame to make mistakes when you learn a new language. The most important is to make efforts and always with a smile !
