STM sounds, art and escalators (#421)

9 February 2012 by OffQc

The public transport provider in Montreal is called la STM (buses and metro).

Two sounds that come to mind when thinking of the metro:

  • the dou-dou-dou (good sound) made by many trains as they pull out of a station,
  • the pi-pin-pon-pan (bad sound) played over the speaker system just before a frustratingly pleasant female voice tells you that there’s another ralentissement de service.

A few stations that I really like:

  • Place-St-Henri (for bright colours),
  • Acadie (for dark colours),
  • Lionel-Groulx (for layout),
  • Namur (for art).

Which ones do you like?

Station Snowdon is disturbing. The layout is confusing and it feels like a dungeon in there.

There is an unspoken rule on the STM escalators. The right side is for standing. The left side is the express lane for people who want to walk or run up the steps of the escalator.

The rule is well established. If there’s a rebel standing in the express lane and blocking it, a person behind trying to walk up the steps of the escalator often seems to get frustrated that someone is in his way.

Is it the same in your city?

My Favorite stations have lots of glass colored glass and light, close to the surface.
    Prefontaine & champs de mars,

The stained glass in McGill station works well in the high ceiling airy room atmosphere.

    Least Favorite is Guy.

Guy hasn’t got anything really special, but I like the little coloured tiles behind the seats. And I like the pastries from the Chinese bakery near the entrance.

Guy is my old one so even though it’s not that great still my favorite 🙂

C’est le même chose dans le côte ouest (pour l’escaliers. Ou escalators. Ou comme c’est dire en français)!
