“Does it fit?” How do you say that in French? (#1047)

7 November 2015 by OffQc

I tried on an article of clothing in a store recently. When I came out of the cabin after trying it on, a woman working at the counter asked me if it fit.

Any idea how she might’ve said it?

She asked:

Ça vous faisait?

When talking about clothes, faire can be used in the sense of to fit.

If you wanted to ask a friend does it fit?, you might say:

Est-ce que ça te fait?
Est-ce que ça fait?

I have been wondering about this for so long!! My friend taught me that when something looks good you can say “Ca me fait bien” or you can say like “Ca te ferait bien” if something would look good on someone…so this makes a lot of sense.

I tend to get confused in stores at change rooms. Like saying “can I try these on?” and etc. (I think it’s “est-ce que je pourrais les essayer?” but I’m not sure) or “do you have this in a smaller size,” “Do you have this in a size —-?” etc.

I always get really confused in the moment as to how to use celui and celle to mean “this” so I get nervous!

I’m sorry, but Ça vous faisait? makes no sense at all. Surely the correct French here is

    Ça vous fait? David Pinto
